New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors since the mid-20th century.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, was not quick to announce his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.

"The choice came down to the security of my family and the imperative to dedicating my full attention on carrying out the affordability agenda the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared on Monday.

Leaving Astoria

His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area known for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.

"To Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, the community will always live inside me and my work," he affirmed.

A Contentious Issue

In his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his own housing situation.

Yet his critics, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for living in the apartment despite the fact that he came from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Some mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg argued it should be a space for civic gatherings, and advocated for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will experience a setting far removed from his humble Astoria home.

With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Within, the lower floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

Affordable Housing Lifeline

His former home is rent-stabilized, a policy where the city regulates on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

Tenants see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses exceeds the average income.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
