Walmart Implements Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products
In a significant move, Walmart has begun enforcing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can buy during one shopping trip. This new rule officially takes effect as of early November, according to a company memo shared with employees.
Addressing Scalper Activity
Although not formally announced by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a widely shared social media clip that depicted a customer buying an enormous quantity of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The employee seen in the video faced widespread backlash for allowing the bulk transaction to proceed.
Policy Details and Potential Loopholes
The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy a maximum of five trading card packs or boxes per store visit. Yet, the wording has sparked debate due to its lack of clarity. What exactly qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and if someone could still purchase five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Moreover, because the restriction is based on each visit, in theory a determined scalper could return repeatedly—purchasing the maximum each time—to accumulate significant stocks over several hours.
The Scalping Phenomenon
For the average collector, such efforts might seem over the top, but for scalpers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, speculators have significantly added to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, spurred by the game's rising popularity.
Some resellers aim to sell unopened products for a profit, while others search for valuable pulls that can command sky-high values. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card from the latest set is currently selling for over $800 in online marketplaces.
Upcoming Releases
This policy change aligns with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, scheduled for November 14th. Pre-release sales indicate premium cards like the Charizard mega evolution listed for nearly $1,500, highlighting the persistent interest and potential scalper target.
Hopefully, the retail limits will help reduce mass buying and increase access for true fans and everyday enthusiasts alike.
