Torrential Rains Exacerbate Conditions for Displaced Palestinians in Gaza, Officials Caution
Persistent precipitation over the recent period have worsened the extremely difficult living conditions of the many hundreds of thousands of displaced residents in the territory, as stated by relief agencies.
"Horrendous" Night Brings Severe Threats
A spokesman characterized the previous night's conditions as "awful", with precipitation so severe that around 15cm (6in) of water gathered on the ground.
"Last night was exceptionally difficult for the residents. The storms were so intense... And the gales were so forceful," said the official.
Officials express extreme worry that children residing in tents in damp attire will fall victim to hypothermia and other ailments.
Fatalities and Extensive Damage
Health authorities have confirmed that one baby has died from exposure and at least 11 other people have lost their lives in structural failures caused by the severe weather.
Additional accounts indicate a greater death toll. Authorities said that multiple structures had totally fallen and dozens had collapsed partially.
