The White Sox Sign Star Hitter Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial $34 Million Agreement.

In a major move for their overhauling roster, the American League club have welcomed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, completing a $34 million contract with the high-profile player.

Contract Details and Player Perks

The agreement includes a seven-figure signing bonus, to be paid within 30 days, combined with compensation of $16 million for the upcoming season and $17 million for the 2027 year.

Additionally, Murakami's compensation can increase based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • A seven-figure bonus for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
  • Half a million dollars for placing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
  • A quarter-million for finishing between fourth and tenth.
  • Another $250,000 for earning the top rookie honor.

His deal includes that he cannot be sent to the minor leagues without his approval and allows him to become a free agent at the end of the deal. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.

Transfer Payment and Franchise History

As part of the transaction, Chicago owes a compensation payment of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's previous team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club get a supplemental fee of 15% triggered incentive payments.

Murakami is set to become the fourth Japanese to represent the South Siders, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu once managed Murakami back in Japan.

Player Profile

Murakami, a left-handed hitter who turns 26 on February 2nd, bolsters a promising core of hitters in Chicago that also features prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a 60-102 season, placing at the bottom in the American League Central but showing a 19-game improvement from the previous campaign.

Having earned Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he belted 56 homers, eclipsing the all-time record for a player in Japan formerly held by legend Sadaharu Oh. That year also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's coveted batting Triple Crown.

His last year was shortened to just 56 appearances due to an muscle issue. Even with striking out often, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 runs batted in.

Over his career tenure with the Swallows, Murakami has accumulated a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 HRs, 647 runs batted in, and nearly 1,000 strikeouts in nearly 900 games. He started playing mainly at first base, he has since transitioned to the hot corner.

Global Stage Success

Murakami's big-game performance were on global view during the last World Baseball Classic. In the semi-final against Mexico, he drove in a walk-off double that brought home two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The following day in the championship game against the United States, he blasted a tying home run in the second inning, setting the stage for Japan's eventual championship win.

The lefty slugger is scheduled to be unveiled at a press conference on Monday.
