The A$150 Million Players Evolving into a Highlight Machine
This year's National Basketball Association campaign tips off now, marking the initial occasion in a decade that Australia's two most prominent hoops stars – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are teamless.
This change signals a transition period, as Australian guard pair Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels emerge as essential players for contending teams, with recently signed huge contracts making them some of the country's top sporting earners.
They aren't the only ones. A group of 14 Aussies are expected to play for playing time across the NBA, including experienced big men Jock Landale and Duop Reath, up-and-coming forwards in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to promising draftees like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.
Josh Giddey Aiming to Show His Worth
After protracted discussions with the Chicago Bulls, Giddey ultimately inked his rookie extension worth $100m ($153m) over four years last month. It's a major deal for the Melbourne native, but in league standards it is cheap for his role and reputation as a lead playmaker. Hesitation for Chicago’s front office to offer a max deal means the 23-year-old enters this season with a point to make.
After being moved by Oklahoma City at the beginning of last season, he watched as his former squad stormed to the title in his absence. As the Chicago aim to make the playoffs in the weaker East, he will need to demonstrate his shooting and defensive skills are elite-level or else he may fall back towards the NBA’s fringe.
Dyson Daniels Eyes Another Step
The guard signed the same deal as his counterpart this week, and after his MIP honor last year, the Hawks guard’s career has taken off in Atlanta following his exit from the New Orleans. He is now lauded as one of the league’s best defensive specialists, and topped the league in takeaways with 3.0 spg – more than one whole takeaway per game greater than the total of the runner-up.
Performing next to flamboyant Trae Young in the Hawks, the 22-year-old can be effective this season as a playmaking option and defensive stopper as long as the team make the playoffs. But if he can improve his long-range game, which was below league average last season, and continue to enhance his distribution and attacking, he could become one of the association's most well-rounded talents.
Johnny Furphy On Highlight Watch
Indiana wing Furphy has burst onto the scene as a fan favourite in Indiana following a succession of spectacular slam dunks in exhibition games. His acrobatics prompted NBA personality Pat Beverley to describe him as the “best white dunker we’ve seen in a long time”, and an opportunity to the All-Star dunk contest could be on the table.
After playing just 8 mpg per contest over 50 games in his debut season, the former college student is in the running for a Pacers lineup that might lean towards youth following setback to lead guard Tyrese Haliburton.
Tyrese Proctor An Outside Shot
Guard Proctor dropped in the June draft all the way to the 49th pick, where Eastern Conference contenders the Cavaliers picked him. The Cavs are front-runners to reach the Finals from the East, so it would be rare for a first-year player taken in the late picks to see significant court time. But the Sydney product has seen time in pre-season, and his pro-level shooting offers him a opportunity to make an impact.
Minutes Crunch Ahead for Experienced Group
Seasoned big man Jock Landale has a chance to claim the starting five spot in the Grizzlies given top prospect Zach Edey will miss the opening of the season after a surgical procedure.
In Portland, Duop Reath is the experienced reserve to youthful big men Donovan Clingan and Yang Hansen, but could see consistent minutes if the Blazers become in the hunt. His fellow player Matisse Thybulle is likely to be deployed as a defensive specialist off the bench.
In Charlotte, Josh Green's summer shoulder surgery has resulted in him with no return date to come back. The player still has a deal for next season, but won’t want to allow his colleagues at the developing Hornets an excessive head start. And injury has already slowed Dante Exum, who has a knee problem and has missed important exhibition opportunities in Dallas.
Australian NBA Players Fighting for Roles
Additionally, there are those who are unlikely to see much, if any, court time this year. Veteran Joe Ingles is returned in Minnesota, but seems to be little more than a big brother ensuring Anthony Edwards in check.
Rocco Zikarsky is likely to be nurtured by Minnesota Timberwolves through their affiliate team. Fellow rookies Lachlan Olbrich in Chicago and Alex Toohey for the Warriors are also in the slow cooker, while the experienced Luke Travers will be hoping to earn playing time alongside his compatriot for the Cavs.
Ben Simmons and Patty Mills Seeking Contracts
Should anyone question Patty Mills was set to retire, he addressed it with a training clip shared on his accounts recently, showing the veteran is still sharp and determined on landing another league deal.
Simmons' intentions is uncertain after an break in his homeland, angling and using with a football. Even though he posted on social media recently to deny suggestions he was retired, the former All-Star – an elite player as recently as 2021 – has yet to surface.
