Senegal's Rising Star Camara: From Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

As I walk into the space, the young midfielder grabs a football he won’t let go of until after our chat. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and natural ability convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult person to convince was not a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.

Overcoming Initial Obstacles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

However, Génération Foot – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the best player in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” Camara said.

A Landmark Year and European Arrival

This move set him on a trajectory to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to the title and being named player of the tournament.

A month later, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to maintain his concentration.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb playing qualities. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are notable assets. He admits a need to temper his competitive fire, after being shown red at the start of his tenures at each French club. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.

Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

With his current club, he cherishes learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Currently, his focus is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he affirms. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills belief.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
