Offspring of Former South African President Zuma Rejects Terror-Related Accusations as Court Case Begins
The daughter of ex- South African President Jacob G Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related charges at the beginning of her trial in the harbor city of Durban city.
The defendant, forty-three, is being prosecuted over statements she published on online platforms in the past during deadly unrest in South Africa that came after the apprehension of her parent.
A seven-day period of chaos in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including looting and intentional burning, left at least three hundred deceased and led to damage worth an estimated $2.8 billion (£2.2bn).
She has been charged of encouraging this violence and faces charges of encouragement to commit terror-related activities and public violence.
Background of the Case
The protests were focused in the areas of Gauteng region and KZN and were triggered by the former president's apprehension for disobeying a court order to give evidence at an investigation into allegations of graft while he was holding office.
Ms Zuma-Sambudla has always rejected the charges against her, with her legal representative previously labelling the state's case as unsubstantiated.
She has also repeatedly said the accusations against her were an attempt to address political scores with her dad after he started his own political organization and ran against the ruling party.
Endorsement and Court Representation
This was reinforced by the Zuma foundation, which stated the case was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial targeting" against the previous head of state and his relatives.
A few of backers from her political organization, her party, turned up outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other party leaders participated in the court sessions inside.
The defense has stated that the testimony presented by government lawyers is insufficient and lacks concrete evidence for a conviction.
