Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a major uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
Securing the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances include securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since joining in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “Miyazawa is now a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, said: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
