HBO's It Spinoff Premieres Second Sooner Than Planned on the Streaming Platform
Excitement is building for the Stephen King adaptation It: Welcome to Derry, that's been garnering praise and incorporating references from other Stephen King works. Now, the network declared that the next chapter will arrive early, released fittingly for Halloween.
Premiere Shift Details
Starting on October 31 at midnight PT, the second episode of the Derry prequel will make its debut on the streaming service, before its Sunday HBO premiere. Subsequent episodes of the show's first season will premiere on the weekend on HBO and HBO Max, building toward the concluding chapter on Sunday, December 14.
Storyline Summary
Based in Stephen King’s It universe, the new series borrows elements from the classic book while building upon the world realized by director Andy Muschietti in the two It films. It Chapter One focused on kids and teens facing supernatural evils, thus it's suitable that the series continues that tradition. Nevertheless, the premiere episode of HBO’s Welcome to Derry shows it aimed to increase the tension, offering more frightening moments than the movies and setting a dark atmosphere for the rest of the season.
Setting and Themes
Set in 1962, this show presents a different group of parents and youngsters residing in a seemingly idyllic town hiding a sinister core. The town operates on a brutal, periodic loop—characterized by hostility, discrimination, and otherworldly forces, as a evil entity reappears once every three decades. Even though Welcome to Derry might sound like it strays too near to the films at first, what differentiates the streaming show is its dual perspective—told from the perspectives of kids and grown-ups simultaneously. Younger characters remain particularly vulnerable to the entity's fear, but the adults also face confronting their individual fears stemming from local discrimination and covert otherworldly powers.
The series premieres on October 31 at midnight PT.
