As a client steps into counselling sessions, they typically look collected and set to begin their session. But through sessions with clients for an extended period, I'm aware what's really happening lies behind a composed appearance.
The person shares that last night, they poured themself "only one glass" to unwind post a stressful day. One glass turned into another, followed by three. That's a habit they become accustomed to; an unspoken custom that assists them "disconnect" away from the racing thoughts that flood their thoughts when their schedule eventually winds down.
Increasing Trend: Relying on Alcohol to Cope With Anxiety
This story represents something that I have been seeing more and more often during sessions. Being a counsellor, I've observed a notable development: an increasing amount of people who are using alcohol to handle their mental health concerns.
Research reveals that approximately over a third of adults who consumed drinks did so to reduce pressure and 18.5% to manage anxiety.
Recognizing Global Stress Factors
We exist in an era of termed by experts as worldwide anxiety factors. Rarely have we been so frequently informed of crisis, conflict and turmoil. Despite we disconnect our devices, the anxieties persist of economic pressure, employment uncertainty, environmental concerns and psychological weariness that comes with being so powerless.
This Concerning Cycle of Alcohol Dependency
For many, alcohol at the end of daily activities transforms into a personal escape. Yet while substances may seem to provide immediate relief, it might worsen anxiety long-term, interrupting slumber, heightening physiological stress and weakening psychological fortitude.

Ultimately, we cannot stop the world's challenges. But we can understand to pay attention to the signals our minds and bodies are communicating once the noise gets excessive. Stress, by its nature, is a signal that an issue internally needs care. Recognizing it is the initial move to reducing it.

In today's world of constant information, possibly the most radical act of self-preservation is this: pause, inhale deeply and assess of your own state of mind. If life appears excessive, don't face these challenges alone; get help, communicate with another person or take that small step of self-assessment. At times, that pause can be the beginning of regaining comfort again.
