Edwards and Gary O'Neil represent the early names under consideration to replace Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pereira was sacked on the weekend following the squad's ten-game winless beginning to the Premier League season.
Furthermore both candidates - both of who have historic associations to the team - are part of the options to be considered by the Wolves ownership.
Edwards is presently at another club, which would create a possible obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton manager - who made over a century of games for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a leading contender for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys support from the Wolves board as they begin the search of appointing a new manager.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected contender, although he would be a shock choice given he was released by the club in December last year.
The former West Ham United player is currently unemployed meaning the club would not need to pay any buyout fee.
