Contaminated Shrimp Issue: The Nation Faces Pollution in Major Manufacturing Area

A significant industrial zone situated on the outskirts of Jakarta is dealing with nuclear contamination following a government team found presence of the hazardous isotope Caesium-137 at 22 manufacturing facilities inside the site, that encompasses businesses shipping chilled seafood.

Urgent Measures and Goods Recall

The finding has triggered immediate cleanup operations and the moving of local residents, following a similar contamination alert in the United States that was linked to the Jakarta plants.

A major multinational store chain is one of the companies that have withdrawn products from their shelves following the finding.

Investigation and Discovery of Contamination

The country's authorities initiated an investigation after the US Food and Drug Administration identified Caesium-137, a nuclear substance, in a consignment of frozen coated shrimp sent by a local firm.

Officials issued an warning advising suppliers and retailers to dispose of the goods and avoid selling it, although the detected amount was well under the authority's intervention limit. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 it had found would not pose an immediate hazard to the public.

The FDA stated: “The primary health effect of concern after longer term, ongoing small amount exposure (for example through eating of contaminated products or water over time) is an increased chance of the disease, resulting from harm to DNA within body cells.”

Widespread Pollution and Medical Examinations

Radiation scans showed at least twenty-two plants in the manufacturing area were contaminated. The official team did not name the twenty-one additional production facilities, but said they would promptly undergo decontamination processes carried out by the country's nuclear authority.

A senior official declared that people living in highly contaminated areas would be moved until the site was decontaminated, emphasizing that the safety of the inhabitants was the “main concern”.

Medical officials also conducted examinations on local employees and people living close to the industrial zone, identifying nine people who tested positive for contact to Caesium-137. These individuals were sent to a hospital before being cleared to return home.

Cleanup and Isolation Measures

The affected sites will right away receive cleanup procedures by the national atomic energy institute. Authorities have also designated the area of a scrap metal factory as an containment center for polluted goods.

Indonesia, which has no atomic power plants or arms programme, believes that Caesium-137 may have come into the country from abroad.

Origin of Contamination and Trade Restrictions

An official representative told reporters that scrap metal shipments were the likely cause of pollution and confirmed the government would immediately enforce restrictions on metal waste arrivals. It was stated that vehicles were also being checked for possible contamination as they traveled through the region.

About Caesium-137 and Health Risks

Caesium-137 is a dangerous nuclear isotope that typically enters the environment as a result of atomic testing or accidents, such as the Fukushima disaster or Chernobyl. Small amounts are present in earth, products and air.

The level detected in the chilled prawns was far lower than regulatory action levels, but the agency stated prolonged exposure to even small amounts of caesium was associated to an higher risk of the disease.

Withdrawal Information

The withdrawn shrimp was sold at large store outlets across at least a 12 US states, such as Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
