Biden Bowl, Anyone? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Passing on unneeded gifts can be seen as slightly impolite – except if it's done for a noble purpose.

A Philanthropic Sale

The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction around 270 presents received by her by international figures during her travels. The diverse haul is said to contain objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gold heels.

These items, together, have an approximate value of €800,000. They will be put up for sale via competitive bidding by a Rome-based auction firm. An exact timeline remains to be announced, although the intention is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the proceeds benefiting various charities.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

The presents are said to be locked away in a repository on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni is also considering auction off gifts received by her predecessors that have been stored away for years.

The detailed catalog is yet to be made public, but partial details was gleaned earlier this year when a detailed register of items received was reviewed by officials. The question focused on if a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.

An International Assortment of Gifts

Among the items:

  • A scarf from the Albanian prime minister, allegedly presented to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A sari from Kerala from India's prime minister.
  • A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A pottery dish from the former US president.
  • A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
  • Paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Various other items including cosmetics, a skateboard, and several rugs from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the oddest gifts were the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Meloni has been credited, particularly from within her party, with building relationships with international counterparts and positioning Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.

This unique auction highlights a unconventional way to manage the protocol gifts that build up during a political career.
